Program notes:
In early 2022, I came across a photo of what looked like a percussionist using and firing off a shotgun in a rehearsal of John Corigliano’s Circus Maximus (Symphony No. 3). Finding the photo funny, I saved it to my phone and went on with my day, but the thought never really left my head: “It’d be cool (and downright insane) to have a shotgun written into the score of one of my works”.
I wanted to compose a piece about someone going through a moment in their life where it feels like they are in a battle in darkness, and being able to get through that moment by coming out at the other end. From entering said battle in the chaos of darkness to being able to make it to the end when the sun rises, with a feeling of glory. This is where I end up on a title for this piece: “Dusk to Dawn, and for Glory”
Unfortunately, I had gotten only as far as deciding the instrumentation for it when I had to focus on getting another piece finished and decided to scrap the work entirely, sometime around October 2022. But then, around May 2023, I was drafting a few works that I couldn’t really seem to get moving forward in the drafting process. That’s when I came across the photo again and reminded me of the piece that I had originally scrapped. This would eventually launch the start of the process in composing this piece, and would very quickly become my main composition project.
Designed as a closer to a concert, Dusk to Dawn, and for Glory is a difficult Grade 5 piece for Wind Ensemble giving challenges to all parts of the ensemble; 16th notes runs the woodwinds, high register playing, rhythmic challenges, and a healthy dose of double tonguing. But it can also be super dramatic, energetic, and fun to both perform and listen to, this piece features everything from lushes and flowing melodies in the woodwinds to brash, deafening, and loud calls from the brass. Truly, (hopefully) a piece a person will either remember listening to and/or playing for a long time.
